Yankees, Cardinals Late-night Thriller on Opening Night

A beautiful night for Freehold Township Little League last night opened the spring baseball and softball season. At the Intermediate Baseball level, the Yankees clashed with the Cardinals in a late-night thriller that ended with the Yankees earning their first win of the spring.

The Yankees jumped out early with four runs in the first inning, while the Cardinals worked hard to overcome the early deficit. Julian P. and Madden B. were key contributors in the middle innings and the Cardinals were able to tie the score in the fourth.

Both teams pitched great in the early innings, as Yankees’ starter Aiden B. pitched four innings and struck out ten batters, and Cardinals’ starter Ronan K. struck out sixteen of his own over five innings pitched.

The Cardinals exploded in the fifth, scoring six runs off of two hits, including a double to the wall by Ronan K. to drive in two runs. The Yankees, however, refused to quit, and scored seven runs on three hits in the sixth to take the lead 11-10.

Jake P. entered the game for the Yankees, and halted the Cardinals’ bats in their final attempt to come back, as the Yankees picked up the win in their first game, 11-10.
