Walk-off Thriller ends in Victory for Yankees over Cubs (4/20/21)
The Cubs battled the Yankees in a wild, fast paced, and exciting game which ended in a walk-off thriller on April 20.
Aiden B. of the Yankees faced off against RJ C. of the Cubs, each looking sharp on the mound. Both would go 4 innings, with one strikeout separating the two, Aiden B. having the advantage with nine.
The teams would be deadlocked at 4-4 going into the final inning, while each team’s scoring was done differently. Peter D. manufactured the Cubs’ first run of the game in the 1st inning off of a walk and a couple of stolen bases. Nate C. and Ryan V. scored the Cubs second and third runs of the game in the 2nd inning, and after a brief scoring drought, Ryan V. scored his second run of the game in as many at bats during the 5th inning.
The Yankees’ bats started off hot in the first inning, as each of the team’s first three batters crossed the plate. Aiden B. would break the 3-3 tie in the 4th with a run, which was a lead that stayed put until the Cubs’ next run an inning later.
The 7th inning was a crazy one to say the least, as Jake P. would pitch for the Yankees in this inning. After a walk to the Cubs’ leadoff batter, the closer was able to retire the next two batters via the punchout. A passed ball would be thrown, which the Cubs would try to capitalize off of with a steal of home, but a great play by the Yankees’ catcher would stop the run from scoring, and the game stayed tied going into the bottom of the inning.
Zach S. singled to get the Yankees started in the bottom of the 7th, and a stolen base after gave them a great opportunity to win with the runner in scoring position. Aiden B. punched the first pitch he saw into right field. Zach S. scampered towards home, arriving just before the Cubs’ throw to home plate, completing the walk-off 5-4 victory for the Yankees.
